Equal Rites is a fantasy novel by Terry Pratchett, the second in his Discworld series. It was first published in 1987 and follows the story of Eskarina Smith, a young girl who is mistakenly identified as a boy and raised as a wizard.

The novel is set in the fictional world of Discworld, a flat planet that rests on the back of four elephants that stand on the back of a giant turtle. The world is home to a variety of creatures, including humans, dwarves, elves, trolls, and wizards.

The story begins in the village of Ankh-Morpork, where Eskarina is born. She is the daughter of a witch, but her father is unknown. When she is a baby, she is mistakenly identified as a boy and given to a wizard named Simon the Sorcerer to be raised.

Simon raises Eskarina as a boy and teaches her the ways of magic. However, Eskarina soon discovers that she is not a boy and that she has the power to use magic. She also discovers that the wizards of Ankh-Morpork are not as benevolent as they seem.

Eskarina decides to leave Ankh-Morpork and set out on a journey to find her own place in the world. She is joined by a group of friends, including a talking cat named Greebo, a dwarf named Rhince, and a troll named Troll. Together, they travel the Discworld, fighting against evil and helping those in need.
