Punk Rock Blitzkrieg: My Life As a Ramone
By Marky Ramone
I was born Marc Bell in Brooklyn, New York, on July 15, 1956. My parents were both Irish immigrants, and I grew up in a working-class neighborhood. I was always a bit of a rebel, and I got into trouble a lot as a kid. I was kicked out of school several times, and I even spent some time in juvenile detention.

When I was 15 years old, I saw the Ramones play at a club in Manhattan. I was immediately hooked by their music. They were so raw and energetic, and they played with a passion that I had never seen before. I knew right then and there that I wanted to be a Ramone.
I started hanging around the Ramones' rehearsal space, and I eventually became friends with the band. In 1978, the Ramones' drummer, Tommy Ramone, decided to leave the band. The band asked me to join, and I said yes.
I was now a Ramone. It was a dream come true. We toured the world, we played on some of the biggest stages in the world, and we recorded some of the most iconic albums in punk rock history.
But it wasn't always easy being a Ramone. We were constantly on the road, and we often had to deal with drugs, alcohol, and violence. We also had our share of internal conflicts. But through it all, we always managed to keep our music alive.
The Ramones broke up in 1996, but we reunited for a few shows in 2001. I've continued to play with various Ramones tribute bands over the years, and I'm still as passionate about the music as I was when I first started.
Punk rock has been my life for over 40 years. It's given me a sense of purpose, and it's helped me to make some lifelong friends. I'm grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of such an important and influential band.
Here are some of my favorite memories from my time with the Ramones:
* Playing at CBGB in New York City in 1976. This was one of the first shows that we played, and it was a pivotal moment in our career. * Touring Europe for the first time in 1977. We were amazed by the size of the crowds, and we were blown away by the reception that we received. * Reuniting with the Ramones for a few shows in 2001. It was great to be back on stage with my old friends, and it was a reminder of how much I loved playing music.
I've learned a lot from my time with the Ramones. Here are some of the most important lessons that I've learned:
* Never give up on your dreams. No matter how hard things get, never give up on what you believe in. * Be true to yourself. Don't try to be someone that you're not. Be proud of who you are and what you stand for. * Follow your heart. Don't let anyone else tell you what to do. Follow your own path and do what makes you happy.
I'm proud to be a Ramone. The Ramones were one of the most important bands in punk rock history, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of it.
