In 1980, George H. W. Bush was elected Vice President of the United States under President Ronald Reagan. Barbara became Second Lady and continued to be a vocal advocate for her husband.
In 1988, George H. W. Bush was elected President of the United States. Barbara became First Lady and was known for her down-to-earth style and her commitment to literacy.
Barbara Bush was a tireless advocate for literacy. She founded the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy in 1989. The foundation provides grants to organizations that support adult literacy programs.
