Construction of the Pentatonic Scale

The pentatonic scale is constructed by taking the first, second, third, fifth, and sixth notes of the major scale. For example, the C major pentatonic scale is constructed from the notes C, D, E, G, and A.

The pentatonic scale can also be constructed from the minor scale. The C minor pentatonic scale is constructed from the notes C, Eb, F, G, and Bb.

Fingerings for the Pentatonic Scale

There are a variety of fingerings for the pentatonic scale on the guitar. The most common fingering is the "box" fingering, which is shown below.

e|-------------------| B|-------------------| G|-------------------| D|-------------------| A|-0-3-5-7----------| E|-0-3-5-7-9---------|

To play the pentatonic scale using the box fingering, simply start on the root note of the scale and play the notes in order. For example, to play the C major pentatonic scale, you would start on the note C on the A string and play the notes C, D, E, G, and A.
