Tote Bag
A tote bag is a great project for beginners because it's simple to make and can be customized to your own style. To make a tote bag, you'll need:
- 1 yard of fabric
- 2 pieces of ribbon or fabric for the handles (each piece should be about 24 inches long)
- Sewing machine
- Thread
- Scissors
Instructions:
- Cut two pieces of fabric that are 18 inches wide by 15 inches high.
- Fold each piece of fabric in half lengthwise and press the crease.
- Unfold the fabric and sew the two pieces together along the long edges, using a 1/2-inch seam allowance.
- Fold the top edge of the bag down 2 inches and press the crease.
- Fold the top edge down again 2 inches and press the crease.
- Topstitch the top edge of the bag, close to the edge.
- Cut two pieces of ribbon or fabric for the handles (each piece should be about 24 inches long).
- Fold each piece of ribbon or fabric in half and sew the ends together, using a 1/2-inch seam allowance.
- Attach the handles to the bag by sewing them to the inside of the bag, about 4 inches from the top edge.
Purse
A purse is another great project for beginners because it's small and easy to make. To make a purse, you'll need:
- 1/2 yard of fabric
- 1/4 yard of lining fabric
- 1 zipper (about 6 inches long)
- Sewing machine
- Thread
- Scissors
Instructions:
- Cut two pieces of fabric that are 10 inches wide by 6 inches high.
- Cut two pieces of lining fabric that are 9 inches wide by 5 inches high.
- Place the lining fabric inside the main fabric, right sides together.
- Sew around the edges of the fabric, using a 1/2-inch seam allowance.
- Leave a 2-inch opening in the bottom seam for turning.
- Turn the fabric right side out through the opening in the bottom seam.
- Press the edges of the fabric.
- Topstitch the edges of the fabric, close to the edge.
- Sew the zipper to the top edge of the bag.
Gift Bag
A gift bag is a great way to package a gift for a special occasion. To make a gift bag, you'll need:
- 1/4 yard of fabric
- 1/4 yard of lining fabric
