Saving Face: My Yearlong Journey in Caricature
In the realm of art, caricature occupies a unique and often controversial space. Simultaneously revered and reviled, caricatures have the ability to capture the essence of a person or idea with both humor and incisiveness. They can reveal the hidden truths lurking beneath the surface, or they can simply offer a playful and exaggerated glimpse into the human condition.

For me, caricature has always been a source of both fascination and trepidation. While I have always admired the skill and wit of great caricaturists, I have also been wary of the potential for caricature to be used as a tool for mockery or cruelty. However, a few years ago, I decided to embark on a yearlong journey into the world of caricature, in an attempt to better understand its complexities and to explore its potential as a form of self-expression.
The Process
I began my journey by studying the works of master caricaturists such as Al Hirschfeld, David Levine, and William Steig. I pored over their drawings, marveling at their ability to capture the essence of a person with just a few deft strokes of the pen. I also spent time practicing my own caricaturing skills, drawing friends, family members, and even strangers.
As I progressed, I discovered that caricaturing was not simply a matter of exaggerating features or drawing people in humorous poses. It required a deep understanding of human anatomy, as well as an ability to observe and interpret the subtle nuances of expression. I also learned that caricatures could be used to express a wide range of emotions, from humor and satire to empathy and compassion.
The Journey
Over the course of the year, I drew caricatures of people from all walks of life. I drew politicians, celebrities, athletes, and ordinary people. I drew people of all ages, races, and genders. And with each caricature, I learned something new about the human condition.
I learned that we are all capable of being both ridiculous and sublime. I learned that even the most powerful people have their insecurities. And I learned that even the most ordinary people can have extraordinary stories to tell.
I also learned that caricature can be a powerful tool for social commentary. In a time when political discourse is often polarized and divisive, caricatures can offer a way to bridge the gap between different perspectives. By poking fun at our leaders and ourselves, caricatures can help us to see the absurdity of our own beliefs and behaviors.
The Results
At the end of my yearlong journey, I had created a portfolio of caricatures that reflected my own unique perspective on the world. Some of my caricatures were funny, some were poignant, and some were simply absurd. But all of them were created with a deep respect for the human condition.
I am grateful for the opportunity to have explored the world of caricature. It has taught me about the power of art, the importance of laughter, and the complexity of the human spirit. And most importantly, it has taught me that even the most ordinary face can tell an extraordinary story.
