By Robert Silverberg
Starpassage Two: Heroes and Martyrs is a 2003 science fiction novel by American author Robert Silverberg. It is the sequel to Silverberg's 1993 novel Starpassage. The novel tells the story of a group of humans who travel to a distant planet in search of a new home. They encounter a hostile alien race and must fight for their survival.
The novel begins with the arrival of the human spaceship Starwanderer on the planet New Albion. The Starwanderer is carrying a group of 1,000 humans who have been selected to establish a new colony on the planet. The humans are led by a group of scientists and engineers, including Dr. John Conway and Dr. Mary O'Hara. Conway and O'Hara are the two main protagonists of the novel.
The humans quickly discover that New Albion is not as hospitable as they had hoped. The planet is home to a hostile alien race known as the Uruk. The Uruk are a technologically advanced race that is determined to drive the humans off of their planet. The humans are forced to fight for their survival, and they quickly realize that they are outmatched by the Uruk.
As the humans struggle to survive, they begin to learn more about the Uruk and their culture. They discover that the Uruk are a deeply spiritual people who believe that they are the chosen race of the universe. The humans also learn that the Uruk have a deep hatred for all other races, including humans.
The humans eventually come to realize that they cannot defeat the Uruk militarily. They must find another way to survive. Conway and O'Hara develop a plan to negotiate a peace treaty with the Uruk. The plan is risky, but it is the only hope that the humans have for survival.
Conway and O'Hara travel to the Uruk capital and meet with the Uruk leader, known as the Archon. The Archon is a wise and powerful leader who is willing to listen to the humans' plea for peace. Conway and O'Hara convince the Archon that the humans are not a threat to the Uruk. They also convince him that the humans can help the Uruk to achieve their goals.
The Archon agrees to sign a peace treaty with the humans. The treaty gives the humans the right to establish a colony on New Albion. The humans and the Uruk begin to live in peace, and they learn to respect each other's cultures.
Starpassage Two: Heroes and Martyrs is a well-written and thought-provoking novel that explores the themes of peace, war, and survival. The novel is a classic of science fiction, and it is a must-read for fans of the genre.
